The GRAMMYs are finally going to give seven-time GRAMMY winner Prince a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award. The Recording Academy announced the honour will be awarded on February 1st, 2025, during the Special Merit Awards at the Wilshire Ebell Theater, one day before the 67th GRAMMY Awards broadcast.

I haven't read anything about who might accept the award on his behalf. I'm going to guess that the Recording Academy will accept it on behalf of the family. I don't understand why it's not scheduled to be awarded during the live broadcast on February second. During Prince’s four-decade career, he released 39 albums and sold over 150 million records worldwide.

According to Grammy.com, “The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy's National Trustees to performers* who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording. (*Through 1972, recipients included non-performers.)”

My personal feelings about Prince are that he was a high-energy, talented, determined, and spiritual person. Three years after his passing, I toured Paisley Park, which was Prince's home, recording studio and concert venue that he built and lived in until his death on April 21, 2016. I believe his urn was up in his bedroom (which was off limits). This kid signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19 and left an estate worth over $150 million when he died at age 57. His contribution to music speaks for itself.

Suffice it to say that I felt like I was in the presence of greatness.

His fellow honourees include The Clash, Roxanne Shante, and Frankie Valli. Congrats to them all.
