LADY GAGA CONCERT TARGETED BY TERRORISTS: BRAZIL POLICE

Updated: May 8

Lady Gaga rocked a crowd of 2.5 million at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) on Saturday, smashing the previous record (for a female) of 1.6 million for Madonna at the same venue last year, according to Variety. However, attendees of the show had not been warned that Brazilian police had narrowly thwarted a terrorist attack planned for the concert.

Brazilian police announced yesterday that they had prevented a bomb attack in an investigation codenamed Fake Monster, and arrested two people prior to the event, in relation to a plot to target the LGBTQ community with explosives during the concert.

"Police said nothing about the alleged plot at the time in an effort to “avoid panic” and “the distortion of information”, the Guardian reported today.

They further quote the police as saying, “Those involved were recruiting participants, including teenagers, to carry out integrated attacks using improvised explosives and molotov cocktails..."

"A spokesperson for Lady Gaga said the pop star and her team 'learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning. Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks.' Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.'"

There were reportedly 5,200 military and police officers at the beach.
